Worrying about the future

I don’t think any of us can help feeling that we are living in difficult and dangerous times. Unfortunately it seems that bad things looming on the horizon has been our lot and that of our ancestors – they also worried about plagues and wars and there doesn’t seem to have been that many long periods of peace and plenty.

I worry most of all for my sons and their future. What will the world look like when they are trying to work and bring up their families. Although climate change is very worrying so is the aggression building up in the world between countries.

I came across something that C S Lewis wrote and found it very reassuring. In his era the atomic bomb was a real worry and he wrote the following: If we are all going to be destroyed by an atomic bomb, let that bomb when it comes find us doing sensible and human things—praying, working, teaching, reading, listening to music, bathing the children, playing tennis, chatting to our friends over a pint and a game of darts—not huddled together like frightened sheep and thinking about bombs. They may break our bodies (a microbe can do that) but they need not dominate our minds. (‘On Living in an Atomic Age’ 1948).

This is so right. We can’t change anything by worrying about it, but we can change our attitude towards it. We can live our lives normally each day and make the most of them and when something happens, let it do so without sucking away the precious days, months and years we have left.

Let’s give all of our worries to God and he will bring us peace.

Philippians 4:6-7

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus”

God bless you and may you be able to put away your worries and trust in him,
